The College Seal , as designed by Professor Joseph E . Dodd , after it was modified to reflect the change in the institution ’ s name from “ Bluefield State Teachers College ” to “ Bluefield State College .”

In 1932 , art professor Joseph E . Dodd designed an elegant seal as the official symbol of the College . A kneeling coal miner and a maiden schoolteacher are receiving the empowering gift of knowledge from Athena , the goddess of wisdom . This was a fitting representation of the role the college had come to play so well .
